When does a fork become a separate chain?

Bitcoin forks BitcoinCompass

A fork changes rules. A chain split happens when some nodes keep one set of rules and others follow another. Follow the history before you group the resulting assets together.

What does a branch in the map mean?

Think of one transaction history reaching a junction. If two groups continue under different rules, there can be two separate chains after that point. A change of rules alone does not tell you whether a lasting split exists.

A fork coin has its own market, software and risks. Holding BTC does not make a fork coin safe to claim or use.

Where do BCH and BSV branch off?

  1. Bitcoin (BTC)

The starting network on this map, launched in January 2009. Its reference software is Bitcoin Core.

  2. Bitcoin Cash (BCH)

BCH split from Bitcoin on 1 August 2017. The disagreement mainly concerned block size. Read it as a separate asset after the split.

  3. Bitcoin SV (BSV)

BSV split from Bitcoin Cash in November 2018. The route is BTC to BCH to BSV, rather than a direct BSV branch from BTC.

Does every Bitcoin name mark a fork?

No. A name is a label, not a record of chain history. The Bitcoin Ecosystem project describes BTC1 and its other family members separately. They are not shown as Bitcoin forks in this map.

What should you establish before going further?

  • Which chain and ticker are being discussed?
  • Is there a documented rule change and a chain split?
  • Which software and records describe the chain now?
  • What risks belong to this asset on its own?

A historical connection is a useful coordinate. It does not establish present security or endorsement.
